Cell Phone Use Policy
It shall be the policy of the Taunton Public Library Board of Trustees that the use of cell phones and beepers shall be restricted to certain designated areas within the library.
Cell phones and beepers are disruptive to the deliverance of library service and the quiet space patrons need to conduct their study and research. The ringing of these phones and the resulting conversations compromise the atmosphere of our public library. Recognizing this, the Taunton Public Library Board of Trustees approved a policy in October 1996 prohibiting the use of such devices in the main library. In response to patrons' increased reliance on cell phones for safety and in the conducting of research, the Taunton Public Library has amended its cell phone policy as of May 21, 2007. This new policy is in a trial phase and may become permanent based on staff and patron feedback and service impact.
Out of respect for other patrons conducting research, studying, and attending programs, and for library staff trying to deliver library services we ask that cell phones, pagers, and other electronic devices be set to silent or vibrate mode. Patrons conducting disruptive or extensive cell phone conversations will be asked to move to the designated cell phone areas in the front foyer and the area by the children's room rear door.
Cell phone use will still be prohibited while receiving service at the public service desk, while receiving one-on-one assistance from staff, and in attendance of programs.
Should you forget the policy while using our library we will kindly remind you. Should you insist on using your cell phone contrary to this policy, we will insist that you leave the library.
