Computer Security Measures Procedure
In an effort to keep these computers functioning as cleanly as possible, the following measures will be followed:
- 1. ALL and EVERY computer will be left on every Tuesday night. In other words, leave your computers on the desktop setting, do not shut them off. Leave all the PACS and INTERNET computers on. EVERY TUESDAY NIGHT.
- 2. __EVERY TUESDAY N IGHT, the timers for Internet use will be disabled__. Mike and the reference staff will only the timers upstairs and Mike will disable the timers on the lobby and Children’s room Internets. Wednesday mornings the timers will have to be activated again but Mike will be here to do that.
- 3. __Instant Messaging capabilities will be disable on all computers, staff, Internet, and PACs.__
- 4. The View Panes on all e-mail accounts will be turned off. The view panes allow you to view your e-mail without opening it and this can be very dangerous allowing viruses, etc., so these will be turned off. This will not affect your e-mail accounts or communication in anyway. And as always be aware that many e-mail attachments are virus carriers. If you don’t recognize the especially the sender or topic line (although many of these are masquerading as SAILS like messages), do not open the mail.
- 5. Deep Freeze will be installed only on the PACS and public Internet stations. Basically, Deep Freeze wipes clean the computer every night restoring it to the original install condition each pass through. This should help rid us of some viruses, spyware, and patron files clogging up the stations.
- 6. No restrictions will be placed on staff computers. All staff will still access their computers as administrators. Contrary to what Mike stated in his e-mail from Sunday April 23, I did not send out notices telling staff that they had to clear all downloading with him for his approval. The authority to decide what to or who can download or what to restrict does not rest with his position. Please be aware however, of what you are downloading because many sites come with computer clogging spyware, pop-up ads, and hacker routes. Be careful about downloading screensavers, they carry a lot of junk -- Go to recognized, legitimate sites such as Nestles.com and all the others that Mike mentioned in one of his e-mails.
